 Ah, this has happened to me before when modding the .cfg files. However, you say this is a fresh install... can you give us some more computer specs, like is it 32-bit or 64-bit Vista, what kind of video card it has, etc.?

In the meantime, you might want to update your video card's drivers. That worked for me for some other games, but it made some worse as well.
